About us
The Instituto Cervantes is the public institution created by Spain in 1991 to promote the teaching, study, and use of Spanish worldwide, and to support the dissemination of Hispanic cultures abroad. Under the authority of Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, we work in collaboration with prestigious national and international institutions, both public and private, with the aim of ensuring that products and services related to the Spanish language adhere to high-quality standards, and of fostering encounters and exchanges between Spanish and pan-Hispanic culture and other cultures around the world.
In carrying out our activities, we primarily focus on the linguistic and cultural heritage shared by the countries and peoples of the Spanish-speaking community. We are present in more than 100 cities across 54 countries, through our centers, classrooms, and extensions on five continents. In addition, we have two headquarters in Spain: the main headquarters in Madrid and another one in Alcalá de Henares.
The Instituto Caro y Cuervo, a graduate-level institution of higher education, safeguards Colombia’s linguistic and literary heritage through education, research, and the social dissemination of knowledge. It was established in 1942 through Law 5 of August 25, 1942. In 1970, it was specified that it is “a national public institution dedicated to scientific research and academic work, whose objectives are to promote scientific research in the fields of linguistics, philology, literature, the humanities, and the history of Colombian culture, and to encourage these studies through their dissemination and through higher education aimed at training teachers and specialists in these disciplines.”
In recognition of the ICC’s research trajectory, in 2010 the National Government entrusted it with leading the teaching–learning processes of Spanish as a Foreign Language, with the aim of making Colombia the leading destination in Latin America for learning Spanish.
